Contractor who was born in Mumbai and lived in Nigeria for seven years experienced a variety of cultural experiences and travels at very young. After attending boarding schools for seven years in London the family moved to Toronto Canada where she spent much of her early years and into early adulthood. Contractor was a student and a classical dancer in Toronto. The Etobicoke School of the Arts (a public high school specializing in the arts) she studied dance and theatre. Contractor began acting at age 16 after completing a total of 10 years of dancing. When she graduated from high school, Contractor received a scholarship from the University of Toronto to pursue an undergraduate degree in sociology and psychology. She also earned an advanced degree in theatre. Contractor, who had spent a year in university, went on to audition at an open call for Pericles in the world-renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival, [Ontario Canada] and won the role. The production she appeared in were praised by Canadian theater critics. Contractor was given the chance to take part in the conservatory, where the top eight men as well as four women can be accepted for a 20-week crash course on the classical stage that she gladly accepted.
